Daphne Bramham: Transparency is not one of UBC’s assets

Despite the happy celebrations marking its 100th anniversary, everything is not fine at the University of British Columbia.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents in a recent poll said they now view UBC less favourably since the unexplained departure of president Arvind Gupta only 13 months into a five-year contract.

And what’s surprising is that the lack of transparency at the publicly funded university has spilled over to the provincial government, which is now viewed more negatively by survey participants.

The online polling done in mid-September involved 611 Metro Vancouver adults, 300 of whom were university educated. It was done by Rushbrooke Communications and commissioned by a group of students, alumni, business and community supporters called Transparency for UBC.
